Excerpt:

Eager to get back to the office, Femi swept his eyes around the car park looking for Felicity. His gaze halted when he spotted Justice Haruna leaving the courthouse. Dressed in a white-and-black striped dress, the garment’s lines draped enticingly over her slender frame.

A vision of his hands mimicking the dress and caressing those gentle curves assailed him. Femi’s heart lurched in his chest at the strangely familiar image, farfetched as it was.

Standing stock still, his eyes trailed her as she confidently strutted towards what must be her official vehicle, a dilapidated Peugeot 308—typical of government cars to be so poorly maintained, especially autos for lesser-ranking officials.

She was beautiful. Tall and slim with just enough curves to make his mouth water. Her smooth, brown skin gleamed in the sunlight’s reflection, reminding him of a tempting mug of hot chocolate. On the cold and rainy nights that Abuja was known for, Femi often indulged in the drink, savouring its frothy decadence. He’d gladly trade his usual for a sip or two of her though.

He watched as she halted mid-stride, swung her bag forward, reached in, and rummaged around until she plucked out a mobile phone. She anchored it against her eat, a bright smile splitting her face.

His throat suddenly went dry at the sight. What a gorgeous mouth, full and pouty with a captivating set of white teeth.  Something about that smile called out to him, and he felt his own lips part into an unexpected smile. Justice Haruna was nothing short of enchanting. Distracting.

And again … familiar.

The Judge’s Secret

I’ll be sharing bits of chapter one and two of The Judge’s Secret until it’s released. *hint* In a few days 😊🤦🏾‍♀️

I’m so excited! Can’t wait to share this story with you all.

Here’s the blurb.

Teaser from Chapter One

“The new judge is a woman,” Felicity added. “Justice Haruna.”

Femi quirked his head and widened his eyes.

“A woman, are you sure? There’s only one on the High Court, and it’s not Justice Haruna.” Femi reached for his black suit jacket slung over the front seat and fished his phone out of the inside pocket. “Do you know anything about her?”

“Yes, I googled her immediately.” Felicity pulled her mobile phone from her purse. With a tap of the screen, she placed the small device between them. “She’s recently appointed, a transfer from Lagos.”

Femi peered at the grainy photograph of Justice Haruna, dressed in complete legal regalia. The large black gown with a white collarette hugging her neck almost swallowed her slender frame. The traditional judicial white wig framed both sides of her oval face. A face with a deep scowl and devoid of makeup that looked none too happy.

“She’s very young. Looks like she’s barely out of her twenties,” remarked Femi. He plucked the phone from his assistant’s hand and stared at the screen.

“She’s thirty-six, according to the online rumours,” Felicity said. She placed a finger over her jaw with a thoughtful look in her eyes. “I also found out from the Internet that her father is a Senior Advocate, a Mr Oseni. He’s a close friend to the governor.”

“Must be one of those over-privileged judges pushed to the top by strong connections and very little experience,” Femi huffed.

Curious, he stretched his thumb and forefinger over the small screen to enlarge the image. An uneasy rumbling stirred at the base of his stomach as he focused on Justice Haruna. Something about the woman was very familiar, especially the eyes. He’d seen her before. Felt like he’d met her. Why did he feel like he knew her intimately—a complete stranger?

EXCERPT

From the east, the wind rose and whipped the trees, bending the branches and leaves. Dark clouds hovered over the Meje clan gathered in the forest clearing. The powers of the spirits they evoked with resonant voices surged in their midst.

The air reeked of a foul presence. Gusts of wind screamed, making the animals scamper in fright.

The hunters of Ori clan remained still and silent, hidden in the long grass, undeterred by the bloodcurdling sounds.

They had waited for this moment all their lives. This mission was the reason they existed, the reason they had been fiercely trained for years.

As devout worshippers of Yemaja, the earth goddess had imbued them with the strength to rid the earth of the abomination that tarnished her order.

The demon hunters with their bodies painted black and white, the symbol of impending war, had in their hands, daggers with long thick horns for handles.

These daggers had been forged from the rocks in the hidden cave beneath Yemaja’s waterfall—the only weapons capable of slaying the beasts short of taking their heads off from their bodies, which proved to be an almost impossible task.

The hunters waited for the opportune moment to strike, their bodies primed for action, eager for the victory to come.

The Meje clan folk held hands firmly by the edge of the lake and chanted after their leader whose head was adorned with cowries and raffia palm.
