First time encounters— Thorns and Roses

This week, I’m posting a snippet of the first time Chuma met Ifeoma from Thorns and Roses.

He’d been patronising her restaurant for months before actually meeting her. She’d been ogling him from behind the serving counter before they met.

This was one of my favourite first encounters between my main characters to write.

🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺

Feeling slightly irritated that a waiter hadn’t shown up yet, Chuma rose from his seat intending to find out why. However, before he could take a step forward, a slender light-skinned lady he’d never seen there before, rushed out from behind the partitioned serving counter.

“I’m sorry for keeping you waiting, sir,” she muttered. “We are short staffed today.” She appeared nervous and fidgety.

Chuma sat back down.

“What can I get you?” she asked, rubbing her hands on her apron. He couldn’t see her face clearly because of the way she had positioned her body while she talked to him. She appeared to be avoiding eye contact with him.

“Oha soup, please,” Chuma replied and then added, “some garri as well.”

She turned her face towards him abruptly as if his order had surprised her. A series of rapid emotions registered in her expressive eyes. First, surprise, then panic, and finally fear. She was afraid of him. He caught his breath, caught off guard by her reaction. He was sure that he had never met her before, so why was she frightened of him? Did she think he was upset about the delay in attending to him?

His need to assure her of his state of mind was immediate and unexplainable. He reached for her hand.

“I’m not upset—” he began, but she snatched her hand away swiftly.

The dim lighting in the room made it difficult for him to see her facial features distinctively, but she looked young. A colourful scarf covered her hair, and baggy clothes and a faded blue apron enveloped her slim frame.

“I’m sorry for the delay again, I’ll get your food now, sir,” she replied, scurrying away.

Chuma shook his head swiftly to clear his mind of that strange encounter, although he did wonder about that expression of fear that he had seen in her eyes. He searched the inner recesses of his memory trying to recollect if there was any possibility that he had met her before today, but he kept coming up empty. No, he had certainly not met her before.

Maybe she thought I was someone else, he concluded within himself.

But soon, wondering led to intrigue, and he waited with anticipation for her to return with his meal

Nothing has to change. We have great chemistry…

Misunderstandings are we common in romance novels. As an avid romance book lover, I look forward to reading tense moments between couples. I’m such a drama queen.

In this week’s #LAPLovenotes, I’m sharing a snippet of the spat between Onome and Nnamdi from Starting Over Again.

This occurred the morning after. How awkward! 😩🤦🏾‍♀️🙂

💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋

“Onome, nothing has to change. We have great chemistry. Why can’t we continue to explore that?”

“But it’s against company policy for us to date.”

“We won’t be dating, we’d just be—”

“Oh,” Onome turned away from him, holding tightly to the bed covers. “Sleeping together,” she finished for him.

“Onome, I didn’t mean it that way,” Nnamdi began, taking a step towards her. She held out her palm to stop him.

“No, I know exactly what you meant,” Onome said, her tone surprisingly calm considering the anger boiling within her.

First time encounters— Melodies of Love

Inspired by a post on Instagram by Romance Writers of West AFrica, I’ll be posting a series about first encounters between main characters in my novels.

In this scene from Melodies of Love, Ikenna is meeting up with Adaora again at his work place after 12 years of not seeing or hearing from her following a bitter breakup.

Although this isn’t the first encounter between them, it certainly felt like one.

🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺

Ikenna’s heart lurched in his chest. It had been twelve years since he’d last seen Adaora. She was still beautiful. His mind had not prepared him well enough for today even though he had planned this meeting for the past four months. He studied her as she stood across from him.

She was still petite, about five feet four inches, barely reaching his chest, but she was no longer thin. Her body had matured into lovely curves which suited her small frame. Her blue silk blouse with colourful embroidery at the top hugged her slender waist, and her black knee-length skirt fitted her round hips perfectly. She looked confident.

His eyes roamed to her feet which were perfectly tucked into a pair of blue four-inch heeled stilettos. It gave her some height, but it was still not enough to match his slightly-above-six-feet height. He had always towered above her. At one time, she had told him that it made her feel safe.

Ikenna stared at the face that had haunted him for the past twelve years. Her beautiful heart-shaped face, her dark luminous eyes which were large for her face, her small nose and full lips coated with pink lip gloss. Lips he had kissed countless times, twelve years ago, until they were swollen. Lips he had a sudden uncontrollable urge to kiss now.

Her hair was done in tiny braids which she had packed into a single bun. She had always liked braided hair. His Ada, the girl who had driven him to succeed because he never felt like he was good enough for her. The girl who made him feel insecure. The only girl who made him want to be better.

“Ikenna…” she whispered with a smile, jolting him out of his reverie. “I can see you are still never without your saxophone!”

He intended just a quick kiss, but…

The butt (ass) grab is a common scene in romance fiction novels.

Depending on how it’s written, it could be either sexy or sleazy.

In this week’s #LAPLovenotes i’m sharing a butt grabbing scene from The Senator’s Daughter

💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋

“I’m having such a lovely time, Nosa. Thank you,” Rita whispered, her eyes shining.

Unable to resist, Nosa lowered his head to her lips. He intended just a quick kiss, but when her tongue brushed over his lips, he needed more.

Capturing her mouth with his own, he drew her closer, roaming his hands over her delicate back, grabbing and squeezing her bottom through her dress. The taste of her was a drug, powerful and addictive—he wanted all of her and would always come back for more.

“Kissy-kissy people, get a room jor,” joked a group of teenage passersby.

Their loud laughter jerked Nosa to reality. He pulled back, cradling Rita in his arms. “We…” He cleared his throat. “We probably should go home now.”

“Don’t play with fire, sweetheart.”

In this week’s #LAP love notes, I’m turning up the heat with a snippet from Unexpected Love, one of the 5 heartwarming love stories from the anthology, Be My Valentine by Love Africa Press.

—————————————————————————————————————-

She suddenly reached between them and grabbed his crotch, squeezing his erection.

“Rush me, please,” she whimpered.

He groaned. “Don’t play with fire, sweetheart.”

“Who is playing, Vin?” Her eyes were fierce and challenging. “Now, are you in or out?”

His breathing became laboured, his nostrils flaring. “Open the fucking door before I attack you in the hallway in front of your neighbours.”

Yemi’s husky laughter sent a jolt of pleasure down his body. Holding her close from behind, he nibbled her ear as she pulled a bunch of keys from her sling bag and opened the door, his pulse pumping with excitement and anticipation.

“I want to take care of you.”

In this week’s #LAPLovenotes, I’m sharing a snippet from Thorn’s and Roses.

“Thanks for forcing me to take today off,” she murmured, a soft smile curving her lips. “I enjoyed being with you today, the conversation, food, wine and the fact that I could forget all my worries.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed yourself. You should take more time off,” Chuma replied, smiling back at her.

She remained standing there, as if immobilised. With the wind scattering her hair over her face, her creamy skin glowing in the illumination provided by the setting sun and the flush on her face, she looked almost ethereal.

Chuma stood beside her and inhaled deeply.

“I want to take care of you,” he said, his voice deep and low.

I hope you enjoyed it.

He stood back and took in the delightful sight.

Hello everyone.

It’s been a sad week. First with the Ethiopian airline crash, then the building that collapsed in Lagos, and then the horrible trailer accident at Onitsha, Eastern Nigeria. May all the souls of all the departed RIP. And may their families find comfort.

This week, I’ll be sharing a teaser from Melodies of love. In this scene, Ikenna just got back from the studio to find his girl busy in the kitchen.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Her back was to him, and it looked like she was chopping vegetables on the kitchen counter.

No wonder she did not hear me come in, Ikenna thought as he stood back and took in the delightful sight.

She was wearing a white camisole top and a pair of multi-coloured Ankara shorts. Those damned Shorts! The way they fitted snugly over her perfectly rounded derriere always kicked his libido into overdrive.

He watched as she wriggled her hips, singing off key to the song that was playing in her ears. Then he recognised the song. It was his last single. That was the moment when his heart stopped.

All the blood in his brain drained south. Now, this is what every man wants to come home to, he thought as he strode purposefully towards her

This woman distracted him…

In this week’s #LAPLovenotes, I’m sharing a snippet from The Senator’s Daughter.

Here, Rita summourned Nosa to the room where he held her captive, because she was feeling bored.

🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺

Their eyes locked for a few seconds and she inhaled sharply, which turned his gaze to her chest. Shit. No bra. He noticed, and he hated himself for it. For noticing three days in a row, how her perky breasts pressed against the soft fabric of whatever shirt she wore, their prominent sharp points poking through, demanding to be noticed. And he couldn’t help that they got his attention.

The growing heaviness in his shorts snapped him back to reality, and his gaze jumped to her eyes which twinkled with amusement. The wench. She knows. Time for a bra. But how did one ask someone he wasn’t intimate with about her bra size?

“What are you watching?”

“Wh-what?” His heart rate doubled. He was taken aback by her provocative question.

“On TV. What are you watching?”

“Oh…Oh… I thought you meant…” He ran his palms over his face and shook his head.

This woman distracted him no end. “The news. I was watching the news,” he finally responded.

He had her full attention now

In this week’s LAP Love Notes, I’m sharing a snippet from my work in progress .

The provisonal title is Love At First Sound. It’s a younger man-older woman romance, and I can’t wait to share the drama that unfolds between Emem and Yomi

In this scene, Yomi finally musters the courage to ask his long-time crush out. Enjoy

Emem is a curvy woman with a closely cropped haircut. I love her already 😊

He watched as she lifted a forkful of cake to her lips, his attention drawn to their succulent fullness. As though sensing his perusal, her gaze jumped to his and held.

His pulse began pounding in his ears. This is it— the moment to ask her out. He had her full attention now.

“Sasha…” he began.

“Emem,” she interjected. “Please call me Emem.”

“Emem, I would like to take you out on a date, maybe dinner.”

Silence. The diameter of her eyes doubled, a soft gasp escaping her parted lips.

“I’m thirty-eight years old,” she sputtered.

He lifted a brow, puzzled. “So?”

“Well … I am not … I’m way older than you.”

Breakup to Makeup- The Governor’s Wife

Hello everyone. Here’s another instalment of the Segment Breakup to Makeup from The Governor’s Wife.

Here, Ogonna has just found out that Philip has been keeping secrets. This scene is in Philip’s apartment. Enjoy.

🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺

Ogonna rose abruptly, lifting her bag off the bed. “Okay, then…”

She made a move to walk past him.

Philip rushed to the door and slammed it shut, bracing himself against it.

“Step away, Phil. I want to leave,” she said.

“ No!” Philip barked, broadening his stance so she had no room to push him away.

“We need to talk.”

“No, we don’t. I have nothing else to say except, you can have her…”

“What?” he said, in wide-eyed disbelief. “I don’t want her.”

“Do you think I’m stupid?”

“Of course, I don’t…please, Ogonna, listen to me. I don’t know what Stella told you, but it’s not what you think.”

“Told me? Stella didn’t tell me anything. I found out on my own.” Ogonna shook her head at him and blew out a humourless laugh. “You can hide your phone all you want now. I’m done. I don’t fight another woman for a man. Not me. So, step away from the door. Now.”

“No, Ogonna…let’s talk. I love you…”

Another bout of her harsh laughter grated on his ears.

“Love me? Love me?” Ogonna spat, her mouth opened wide in disgusted disbelief. “Is that what you also tell Stella when you fuck her?”

Philip cringed. Ogonna rarely swore. This was worse than he could have imagined.

“You told me you broke up with her…made me believe there was nothing between you two. Like a fool, I believed. Even after I saw you with her in the hotel car park, I let myself believe the Philip I love would never betray me. And then bam! I find out you have maintained contact with her behind my back and that she’s pregnant.”

“ I haven’t maintained contact with her!” Philip shouted.

“You must think I’m a total idiot…I went through your computer, Phil.”

His lips parted in a shocked gasp.

“Yes, I did! Yes, I did,” Ogonna spat unrepentantly. “You think hiding your phone would hide your lies? Your computer’s Facetime records calls, too, and I saw the repeated calls from an unknown number. And that number has called three times this week. Curious, I dialled it back. Guess who answered?”

Philip sighed. “Ogonna…”

“Don’t Ogonna me. I told you I don’t do side chick…”

“You are not my side chick, you are my main…” Philip scrubbed his face with his palm in frustration “I mean…I don’t have a side chick.”

Ogonna shook her head. “Clap for yourself,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Lucky me, the main chick. All that talk about loving me, O and P together forever. What a fool I’ve been.”

“No, you are not. It’s true, Ogonna. You and me, we belong together.” Philip moved away from the door and pulled her into his arms.

“Let me go!” she screeched, swinging her bag at him.

“No!” he yelled, pulling her into a tight embrace. “Ogonna, please, listen…I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid you would leave…”

“Let me go!” she screamed again.

“No, not until you listen to what I have to say…”

“Philip, there’s nothing you can say.”

“There must be, Ogonna. Promise me you will listen, Ogonna. We’ve been together for over nineteen years. Don’t throw it all away—”

“You threw it away by cheating on me, Phil!” she sneered. “Now, let me go.”

“I didn’t cheat on you…I love you.” He held on to her, arms around her waist, anchoring her to him so she couldn’t wriggle away.

Ogonna stiffened in his arms. He sensed her body weakening, the fight seeping out of her, and Philip seized the moment to push his advantage. Ogonna couldn’t leave him. Not when she didn’t know the complete story.

“Please listen, Ogonna, let’s sit down and talk. You need to hear everything. If you still want to leave…then…”

She remained still in his arms, breathing heavily, her soft breasts crushed against his chest.

“Fine, Phil, talk,” she said in a hoarse whisper. “But no more lies. I want the truth.”

Philip heaved a relieved sigh and released Ogonna from his grip, hating that he had held her against her will, but seeing no other alternative.

“Okay,” he whispered, taking her hand and leading her towards the bed.
