Teaser Thursday— Unexpected Love

Hello lovelies!
This Thursday’s excerpt is from Unexpected Love, one of the stories from the anthology, Be My Valentine.

In this scene, Vincent Mba is thrilled to see Yemi Okeke after they both find themselves alone at a restaurant without dates.

???

The loud ringing of her phone interrupted them.

“Sorry,” she muttered, retrieving the mobile device from her bag.  She swiped her thumb against the screen and rested it on her ear.

“Okay, you are here … thanks. I’ll walk over now,” she said before ending the call.

“Your taxi?” he asked.

Does he sound as disappointed as I feel?

She nodded. “I have to go.”

“Don’t go,” he said at the same time.

Silence.

“Don’t go, Yemi,” he said again, his tone decisive. “Let’s have dinner. I am here; you are here. We are both dressed up for dates. My date left; yours drove you away. I see fate at work in this.”

Her lips started to twitch. Conflicting emotions whirled around inside her. She wanted to stay. But she also worried about dining with her boss. The way he made her feel put her at a disadvantage. She had spent the two weeks since she’d been at St Andrews longing to catch a glimpse of him while at work and feeling incredibly disappointed when she hadn’t.

Within the few minutes of standing outside in the chilly evening with Vincent, she had enjoyed herself more than she’d done for weeks. She could see herself falling for him and didn’t want to be known as one of those women who’d achieved success by canoodling with the boss.

Could she maintain a professional relationship with him if they dined socially? Not likely. Not when such a strong physical attraction to him plagued her. She should probably decline and maintain a safe distance …

“Come on, it’s just dinner … We’ll have fun,” he said, his deep voice sending waves of excitement down her spine, weakening her resolve to keep away. “I don’t bite.”

“Okay,” she agreed. “Let me go over and pay the taxi driver for his time. I’ll be right back.”

He nodded.

As she walked away, she could swear she heard him whisper, “Won’t bite unless you want me to.”
