This week’s excerpt is From Love at First Sound.
Do you ever blame yourself for someone else’s behaviour? I tend to do that a lot.
“It’s my fault she was rude to me. If I hadn’t been friendly to her, she wouldn’t have had the opportunity.”
I know it’s a defective kind of reasoning but I can’t help myself sometimes.
In this scene, Emem is having similar thoughts.
The thought came again. Like it had done repeatedly since she’d found out her fiancé was also engaged to someone else.
No matter how hard she’d tried, it seemed almost impossible to shake off that nagging worry that she could have done something to prevent it.
Maybe if she’d been more attentive, sexier, tried to be more of a homemaker, sucked up to his mother like he’d wanted her to, and definitely maybe if she hadn’t cut her hair—just maybe if she still left it chemically straightened, long and flowing down her shoulders, Ejike wouldn’t have strayed.
Emem shook her head at her own foolishness. Ludicrous.
She twisted her lips. Blaming your hair now, are you? Really?
As a trained psychologist and relationship counsellor, she usually helped other people with issues like this and knew that blaming herself for the actions of another person was completely outrageous.
But knowing better didn’t stop her from condemning herself.
Hope you enjoyed reading.
